More Art… More People… More Places
Welcome to Art on Tour – Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s community engagement programme. We aim to share Swindon’s fantastic collection of modern art as widely as possible, providing inspiring opportunities for anyone and everyone to experience art, wherever they are.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, we will be sharing Swindon’s art collection across the town, working with schools, colleges, businesses, community centres, cultural venues, and healthcare and wellbeing organisations. We will also be opening up a wealth of access and opportunities online. We are very grateful for funding from Swindon Borough Council.
Why are we doing this?
Many people don’t realise that Swindon has one of the most important collections of Modern British Art in the UK. Our solution is to take more artworks out of storage, and share them with a number of places and communities throughout Swindon. We want to find ways to allow more people to benefit from the art in our collection.
With over 600 artworks, including various Turner Prize winners and some of the biggest names in British art, the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art is one of the most nationally significant modern art collections outside London. The Collection spans 150 years, and includes household names like L.S Lowry, Lucian Freud, Grayson Perry, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Michael Craig-Martin, Howard Hodgkin, Frank Auerbach, and Richard Long. It features work from most major movements and schools in Modern British Art, as well as an extensive collection of work by home-grown Swindon artists like Desmond Morris.
Who are we?
The Art on Tour team consists of Katie Ackrill, Project Engagement Officer, and Mags Parker, Learning Officer. We’re usually based at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, but are currently working from home.
