About Art on Tour 2020

More Art/More People/More Places

Welcome to the Art on Tour 2020 blog! This site is all about sharing Swindon’s fantastic art collection and providing interesting opportunities for anyone and everyone to experience art, wherever they are.

How can you explore Swindon’s Art Collection?

This blog offers a number of ways to explore Swindon’s art collection. You can listen to our ‘Art Snaps’ podcast, which tells you a little more about aspects of the collection in short and interesting (well, we think so!) episodes. You can also read our regular inspiring blog articles about the collection.

If you have a family to entertain, why not check out our ‘Art Burst’ learning resource packs and creative activities. Each Art Burst resource pack features an artwork from the Collection, and provides creative ways for children (and their grown-ups!) to explore it, including links to other subject areas. Designed to keep little minds and hands occupied! Art Bursts can be adapted for 4 – 12 year olds.

We also have some superb educational resources available to support teachers, schools and home educators.

What is Art on Tour?

Art on Tour is an exciting education and engagement programme, based at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Throughout 2020, we are sharing more of Swindon’s art collection throughout the town, through work with schools, colleges, businesses, cultural venues and events, healthcare and wellbeing organisations, and community centres.

Why are we doing this?

Many people don’t realise that Swindon has one of the most important collections of Modern British Art in the UK. Our solution is to take more of the collections out of storage, and share them with a number of places and communities throughout Swindon.

We’d also love it if we can find ways to allow more people to benefit from the art in our collection, and are building interesting engagement and education programmes to help you get involved.

As you can imagine, much of the work listed above is sadly delayed or cancelled due to the current COVID-19 situation. So, we’ve taken another look at how we can bring Swindon’s art collection to you, and have created a number of free digital resources. We hope that these will entertain, educate and excite during this uncertain time.

Who are we?

The Art on Tour team consists of Katie Ackrill, Project Engagement Officer, and Mags Parker, Learning Officer. Together we are finding interesting ways to share Swindon’s art collection with more people, in more places, throughout the town. We’re based at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery in Old Town, which holds an important collection of Modern British Art, and a number of fascinating local history collections.
